Finger Abacus GuideCount 0–99 on Hands

In mental arithmetic, your two hands act as a 2-digit abacus (0 to 99). The fingers match the beads exactly:

Hand PartRight Hand (Ones)Left Hand (Tens)Abacus Bead
Thumb550Top Red Bead (Worth 5)
4 Fingers1 each (1, 2, 3, 4)10 each (10, 20, 30, 40)4 Bottom Yellow Beads (Worth 1 each)

Frequently Asked QuestionsParents & Tutors
What kind of abacus is this?
This is a 1-bead on top, 4-beads below abacus (often called a Soroban). Each rod has 1 red bead on top (worth 5) and 4 yellow beads below (worth 1 each). It is the world's most popular tool for learning fast mental math because it makes numbers visual and fun!
How do you read a number on an abacus?
Only beads touching the middle bar count! A yellow bottom bead pushed up counts as 1. The red top bead pulled down counts as 5. Simply add the active beads on each rod and read them from left to right.
How do small friends (+5) work?
Small friends are buddy numbers that add up to 5: (1 and 4) or (2 and 3). When you don't have enough bottom yellow beads to add, pull down the red 5 bead and take away the buddy number! For example: +4 = +5 − 1.
How do big friends (+10) work?
Big friends are buddy numbers that add up to 10: (1 and 9), (2 and 8), (3 and 7), (4 and 6), and (5 and 5). When a rod is full, add 1 to the rod on the left (+10) and take away the buddy number! For example: +9 = +10 − 1.
